1. This competition is organized by the Laurie Herring Prize for Critical Response.

  2. Entry to this competition is open to students aged between 11 and 18 years on the 10th February 2025 who are full time residents of the UK (including the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man). Proof of age, identity and eligibility may be requested.

  3. Entries will be judged in 3 age categories - ages 11 - 12 (on 10th February 2025), ages 13 - 15 (on 10th February 2025) and 16 - 18 (on 10th February 2025).

  4. Entrants must submit either:

    1. A 800 - 1000 word review / essay / critical response to anything in the world that has caught your eye, or otherwise got you thinking.

    Or:

    2. A drawn, filmed or recorded response.

  5. Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

    1. Offering an engaging critical response

    2. Offering a stylish response

    3. Attention to detail

    4. Enjoyment.

  6. The personal data provided will be used solely for the purposes of administering the competition.

  7. The competition closes at 0900 on the 10th Feb, 2025. Submissions received after this date will not be considered , so please do not wait until the last minute to send your entry.

  8. Only one entry per entrant is permitted. If more than one entry is submitted, only the entrant’s first submission will be considered.

  9. Entries should be double-spaced, with the pages named in the header and numbered in the footer.

  10. All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The Laurie Herring Prize for Critical Response accepts no responsibility if entrants ignore these Terms and Conditions.

  11. Entries must not include defamatory, obscene, offensive, or any other unsuitable material. Entries must be suitable to be published, or used online by The Laurie Herring Prize for Critical Response for an audience of all ages.

  12. Entrants retain the copyright in their entries but grant to The Laurie Herring Prize for Critical Response a perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to publish and post the entry online and on any other platforms yet to be envisaged. This license will be deemed to include all necessary rights and permissions to enable such use by The Laurie Herring Prize for Critical Response, to fulfil the prizes and to complete the administration of this competition.

  13. By submitting a critical response, the entrant agrees that The Laurie Herring Prize for Critical Response may, at its sole discretion, edit, adapt, abridge or translate the entry for the purposes listed in clause 12 above.

  14. The Laurie Herring Prize for Critical Response reserves the right to disqualify any entry which breaches any of these Terms and Conditions, or to withhold a prize if, in its opinion, entries do not reach the required standard.

  15. The Laurie Herring Prize for Critical Response reserves the right to amend these Terms and Conditions or cancel this competition at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, or if circumstances arise outside its control.

  16. The Laurie Herring Prize for Critical Response, its subcontractors, subsidiaries, agencies and/or any other organization associated with this competition cannot accept any responsibility whatsoever for any technical failure or malfunction or any problem with any server, internet service provider, system or otherwise which may result in any entry being lost or not properly registered or recorded. Proof of sending is not proof of receipt.

  17. The Laurie Herring Prize for Critical Response will notify the winners in advance of any announcement. We regret that we cannot notify entrants who have not been successful.
